Goverment Requirements


Exchange students with a J-1 visa are required by the US Department of State to have health insurance that meets specific requirements:
  • Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
  • Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
  • Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $50,000
  • A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness.
  • The insurance policy must be from a company that meets minimum rating requirements.
J-2 dependents (a spouse or child under 21 years of age accompanying a J-1 student visa holder) have the same insurance requirements.

Health insurance for J-1 and J-2 visa holders must cover the dates of the program.
St. Edward's University Insurance Policy

St. Edward's University automatically charges health insurance to students. Information about the Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) can be found on the Health and Counseling Center website.

Exchange students who already have insurance can ask to waive the St. Edward's insurance.
 
The waiver application can be found online in MyHilltop by searching for "submit proof of insurance." To complete the waiver, exchange students must be admitted to the university and registered in at least 6 credit hours of class.

For the fall exchange semester (August-December), the waiver application will open in June.

For the spring exchange semester (January-May), the waiver application will open in December.

To waive St. Edward's University insurance, a student's plan must meet the US government requirements as well as St. Edward's University requirements:
